Periscope

By Avinia Naidu, Community Manager

We’ve seen many live streaming apps for mobile users, from SnapChat to Vine. And what’s important to note is the accessibility, popularity and features that make each app as great as the next. With the influx of multiple apps it’s no surprise that there is great competition in the world of Social Media. Everyone has a story or experience that they want to share in their own way, quickly and easily, with the online world as their audience.

When it comes to real-time storytelling, Periscope is leading the pack as the mobile app enables its audience to view the world through the eyes of another, be it a protester on the street or a lovers’ view from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The app enables a new way to discover events, places and people; and currently there is no better way to experience a place at that very moment than through live-streaming.

Periscope has made its mark on the Social Media scene and its following is growing rapidly. The app was launched over a year ago and was recently acquired by Twitter which has led to an increased popularity amongst its users. Periscope’s ability to offer real-time video footage matches Twitter’s immediate take on Social Media so their shared vision caters perfectly to the vast Twitter’s community.

“A picture may be worth a thousand words, but live video can take you someplace and show you around.” – Twitter

How does it work?
Periscope streams footage from users’ devices to their followers in real-time. The live-stream footage can then be replayed at a later stage unlike other live-streaming app. It’s really easy to use – when you log in and press the button to record, you instantly notify your followers that you are online. You also have the option to customise your profile so that it is visible to the public, or restricted to your followers or just a few close friends. These viewers can click on ‘hearts’ that count as a ‘like’ and are also able to comment on the streamer’s broadcast.

With the latest upgrade, users are certified by the classic Twitter verified badge which guarantees the legitimacy of content. Celebrities such as Aaron Paul and Tony Hawk have already established a strong presence on the platform and it’s only a matter of time before many  more celebs, Twelebs and your everyday Joes live-stream their Periscope stories.
